Demetre Chiparus Art Deco 'Tender Promises' Chryselephantine Figure Group (Etling Mark) on Marble/Onyx Base
Long Description
A spectacular Art Deco chryselephantine figure group titled "Tender Promises" (Circa 1925), originally modeled by the master of the Art Deco era, Demetre H. Chiparus (Romanian, 1886–1947).
This magnificent sculpture is a dynamic composition of cold-painted and parcel-silvered bronze and intricately hand-carved ivory (chryselephantine), set on a striking, stepped marble and onyx base. The figure group depicts a dramatic, intimate moment: a kneeling Pierrot figure, distinguished by his silver and gold trousers, leans in to whisper a promise to his seated Pierette, who is draped in a metallic blue dress.
Attribution and Marks:
The sculpture is signed "Chiparus" on the base and bears the esteemed Etling Paris foundry mark, which is characteristic of the finest Chiparus sculptures produced during the 1920s. Note: As referenced in the provenance, this sculpture may be a premium, high-quality Art Deco Revival recreation cast from the artist's original molds, offering an opportunity to possess a classic masterpiece at an accessible price point.
Craftsmanship:
The ivory is exquisitely hand-carved and frequently tinted to produce nuanced expressions, while the bronze is finished using a polychrome technique of patina and cold painting, replicating the opulent effects achieved by the original craftsmen of the Années Folles. The figures, composition, and opulence are consistent with the model featured in Shayo, A. Chiparus: Master of Art Deco, p. 92, plate 19.
Display and Dimensions:
The sculpture is secured to its elaborate, tiered base of marble and onyx. Its imposing width and dramatic posture make it a commanding focal point.
Approximate Height: 20–21 inches (51–53 cm)
Width (Length): Up to 30 inches (76 cm)
Model Dimensions: The figures are cast from a model of "Tender Promises," an example of which measures up to 31 inches long.
